Marco Zaccaria: Decoding Uterine Contractility in Reproductive Medicine
Marco Zaccaria, Global Product Manager at ESGE European Society Gynecology Endoscopy, shared a post on LinkedIn about paper by Pierpaolo Nicolì et al. published in Reproductive BioMedicine Online:
“This new article published in Reproductive BioMedicine Online proposes a radical reassessment of uterine contractility in both physiological and pathological conditions, redefining it as a key diagnostic target in reproductive medicine
This review explores the electrophysiological role of Cajal-like interstitial cells (ICC-like), which have been identified as the actual pacemakers responsible for the generation and fine kinetic regulation of myometrial contractions
Uterine motility is not random but strictly aligns with the hormonal fluctuations of the menstrual cycle. These dynamic patterns facilitate the various stages of conception, such as sperm transport and embryonic implantation
Studies confirm that the frequency and speed of contractions (peristaltic waves in the junctional zone) peak during the late follicular phase to facilitate the ascent of the gametes, while they reach their lowest levels during the menstrual phase and late luteal phase to ensure the rest necessary for implantation
