Daphne Catherine Spyropoulos: Insights from ISNPR 2025 on Diet and Brain Health

Daphne Catherine Spyropoulos,Gastrointestinal Psychologist at Cleveland Clinic, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“After presenting my research about the gut composition of patients with Alzheimer’s disease, affected by fat and fiber consumption, in Alabama (the state with the highest mortality rates due to Alzheimer’s) and Cape Town, South Africa (the country with the lowest documented prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease in the world) at the International Society for Nutritional Psychiatry Research Conference in Taiwan this week, I am excited to share some key findings I kept from my amazing colleagues’ presentations:

  1. ‘Intensive monoculture, agro chemical inputs reduce soil microbial richness and functional resilience – limiting plant phytonutrient profiles and disrupting environmental microbiota that historically colonized human hosts… There is microbial depletion and disruption in the rising prevalence of autoimmune, cardiometabolic disorders due to western diet’ (Felice Jacka 2025)
  2. Sulforaphane, a bioactive compound found in cruciferous vegetables, can help enhance stress resilience (Kenji Hashimoto, 2025)
  3. Malnutrition is prevalent in the geriatric population and nutritional status should be a standard part of psychiatric and neuro-assessments (Polona Rus Prelog et al., 2025)
  4. Sarcopenia (the progressive loss of skeletal muscle and function) is a major determinant of frailty, morbidity and lower quality of life in older adults. Screenings are necessary in psychiatric and neuro-assessments (Simic et al., 2025)
  5. Meal provision interventions for older adults with schizophrenia showed issues with meal adherence (Johnston et al., 2025)
  6. Major Depressive Disorder – linked to neuroinflammation and changes in neuronal and glial function. Inflammatory cytokines in blood and CSF are potential biomarkers for MDD progression (Ikbal Andrian Malau et al., 2025)
  7. Metabolism found to be a primary driver of pathogenesis of schizophrenia in mice (Hung at al., 2025)
  8. Micronutrients are an efficacious and safe treatment for severe irritability in teenagers- significant reductions ins suicidal ideation- implementing these findings could improve psychiatric outcomes (Rucklidge et al., 2025)
  9. University freshmen show substantial rates of mental health problems. Pursuing a degree in health sciences appears to be associated with healthier lifestyles but with higher odds of clinically significant anxiety (Balanza- Martinez, 2025)
  10. Diet quality during pregnancy may predict postpartum depressive symptom severity (Wallace et al., 2025)
  11. In chemotherapy for breast cancer: chemotherapy shifted the microbial fecal community, altered fecal and circulating gut metabolites (short-chain fatty acids) and increased peripheral nerve side effects (i.e. neuropathy) in mice (Grant et al., 2025)
  12. Catecholaminergic pathways as promising therapeutic targets for mitigating stress-exacerbated intestinal disease (Allen, 2025)
  13. Maternal viral infection – offspring psychiatric risk intensifies with increasing severity of maternal disease (Antonson, 2025)”
