“Every woman’s menopause journey is unique. When it comes to menopause and cancer – choices can be difficult and individualisation becomes ever more important.
When diagnosed with breast cancer while taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause – women are advised to stop HRT.
Sudden stopping of HRT can be challenging for many. Women need access to support and information at this time.
Several scenarios or questions and the pros and cons of various approaches need to be considered in the clinics –
severity of menopause symptoms, stopping suddenly versus weaning off while active treatment is planned, non-hormonal alternatives for symptom management, and follow-up/monitoring while oncology treatment is completed and possible endocrine therapies are considered thereafter.
This is one situation where women need access to reliable information and support. Multidisciplinary team working across medical specialties is key.
Currently, the support remains patchy and variable, but with efforts from patients, campaigners and several health professionals, one hopes that progress will happen so that everyone gets the support they need to make informed choices.”
