Amos Grünebaum: The Present and the Future of Baby Making
Amos Grünebaum, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine, shared on LinkedIn:
“A colleague is speaking on ‘The Future of Baby Making.’
I would like to hear the talk called ‘The Present.’
In 2022, US clinics ran 435,426 ART cycles and produced 98,289 infants – 2.6% of all US births. That 2.6% gets the conferences, the capital, and the word ‘future.’
The other 97.4% got this: first-trimester prenatal care down to 76.1%, no prenatal care up 5%, preterm birth stuck at 10.4% for twenty years.
Look at which parts of reproduction get called the future. Embryo selection. The add-on menu. Surrogacy.
What they share is not evidence. It is a price tag, paid directly, billed per cycle and per journey.
And often the evidence is thin. PGT-A, endometrial receptivity testing, most add-ons – none have raised live birth per intended patient, which is the outcome women think they are buying.
Meanwhile, IVF is largely a workaround for what we failed to prevent upstream: deferred childbearing, untreated infection, obesity, metabolic disease in men.
Nobody markets prevention. There is nothing to invoice.
Ask what the future holds for the 97.4%.
If the room goes quiet, that is the talk worth giving.”
