“Embryo and Oocyte Vitrification Devices – At a Glance
Vitrification has become an essential part of modern assisted reproductive technology, but the device used to vitrify and store an embryo or oocyte is more than just a carrier.
Today, embryology laboratories can choose from a wide range of vitrification devices, each with different approaches to loading, handling, cooling, storage, warming, and protection during the Vitrification Procedure.
I tried to put together this overview of some of the major devices currently available in the IVF market, considering ongoing product developments.

One of the most important differences is the open vs. closed vitrification approach.
Open systems can provide extremely rapid heat transfer through direct contact with liquid nitrogen, while closed systems are designed to physically isolate the specimen from direct LN₂ exposure. But this is only one part of the decision.
In daily embryology practice, factors such as minimal-volume loading, cooling and warming performance, ease of handling, visibility of the specimen, secure closure, identification, storage efficiency, laboratory workflow, and operator experience all matter.
And ultimately, there is no single device that is automatically the ‘best Vitrification Device’ for every IVF laboratory.
The most appropriate system is the one that performs consistently within a laboratory’s validated vitrification protocol, meets applicable regulatory and quality requirements, and allows embryologists to work safely, efficiently, and reproducibly.
