Sometimes the Right Diagnosis Doesn’t Just Explain the Pain… – Mayflower Women’s Hospital

”She was living with unbearable period pain. But the real problem wasn’t where everyone expected it to be.

Her scans looked ‘normal’. Her pain was called ‘functional’. Every month, a small hidden cavity inside the muscle of her uterus would bleed – with nowhere for the blood to go. It kept collecting inside, and the pain continued.

Careful evaluation, including ultrasound during surgery, revealed two unusual cavities deep within the uterus. The diagnosis: Accessory Cavitated Uterine Mass (ACUM) – a rare condition that is easily mistaken for more common causes of pelvic pain.

Removing the problem wasn’t enough. The surgery had to relieve the pain and protect her future fertility. The abnormal cavities were removed intact while preserving the normal uterine cavity, and the uterus was reconstructed to restore its structure.

Months later, the outcome said more than any scan could. She conceived naturally – without IVF, without ovarian stimulation.

Sometimes the right diagnosis doesn’t just explain the pain. It can change the future.
