Lucy Froese: Having a Child Already Doesn’t Make Losing Another Baby Hurt Any Less…
Lucy Froese, Fertility and IVF Coach, shared on LinkedIn:
“Nearly 9 years ago, my world shattered.
We were trying to grow our family, and having needed IVF to have our first child, we’d started IVF again.
But then something happened that I never thought was possible.
I found out I was pregnant naturally.
We’d already started our cycle when I discovered I was pregnant.
After everything we’d been through, I genuinely didn’t believe I could conceive without IVF.
I was in complete shock.
But I was also over the moon.
We were going to become a family of four.
I’d already started imagining what life would look like with another baby.
And perhaps I was naive, but I never really thought I would miscarry.
Until I did.
I was devastated.
And what made it feel complicated was that I already had a child.
I kept telling myself I should be grateful.
I had a beautiful little girl.
I knew how lucky I was to have her.
But I was also grieving the baby I’d lost.
And being grateful for one child didn’t stop me desperately wanting another.
There were days when I didn’t want to get out of bed.
Days when I just wanted to shut the world out.
But then I’d feel a little hand tugging at me.
‘Mummy, get up.’
She was only two.
She had no idea what had happened or why Mummy was so sad.
She just wanted her mum.
And somehow, on the days when I didn’t think I could face anything, she got me up.
She gave me a reason to keep going through those painful weeks and months.
And through the uncertainty of trying to grow our family again after loss.
She was my little rock, without ever knowing it.
This photo was taken just a month after my miscarriage.
And it’s one of the reasons I’m sharing my story during Pregnancy and Baby Loss Awareness Week.
Because pregnancy loss can be so much more complicated than people realise.
I was grieving a baby I never got to meet.
Trying to make sense of how I’d fallen pregnant naturally when I never thought I could.
Wondering whether it would ever happen again.
And feeling guilty for being so heartbroken when I already had a child I adored.
But having a child already doesn’t make losing another baby hurt any less.
And going on to have more children doesn’t mean you forget the one you lost.
It’s been nearly nine years since my miscarriage.
But this photo still takes me right back.
Back to the heartbreak, the sadness and everything we went through.
My husband was my rock through it all.
And so was this little girl, without even knowing it.
She’s older now, and I’ve still not told her just how much she helped me through those painful days, weeks and months.
One day I will.”
