Hugo Villanueva: Building the Fetal-Maternal Interface
Hugo Villanueva, Co-Founder and CEO of Sita Bio, shared on LinkedIn:
“We can’t fully understand pregnancy by studying the embryo alone.
At Sita, we believe the maternal side of pregnancy deserves just as much attention.
That’s why we’re working to recreate the environment where implantation begins.
We’ve developed human and animal models to study implantation and trophoblast invasion, including engineered uterine tissue that supported mouse embryo development to around one-third of gestation.
These models give us novel ways to investigate the early interactions between fetal and maternal tissue, and generate a plethora of data on how the placenta begins to form.
We’ve shared more about the science, our approach, and what comes next in our latest blog.

Many thanks to the Nikon Imaging Center, Rob Tetley and Stefan Wojcik for the beautiful pics of our implanted embryos.
Experiments were performed by our team of extremely talented biologists Maria Ubach Vidal, Yuntao Wang and Irene M. Aspalter.”
