Laura Eyeh Anwah: Why Pregnant Women Should Attend 8 Antenatal Visits Instead of 4
Laura Eyeh Anwah, Volunteer Coordinator at Ayossa Network, shared on LinkedIn:
”Most pregnant women are told to go for 4 antenatal visits!!
The World Health Organization says that number should actually be 8.
Worldwide, only 64% of women even reach that old 4-visit goal.
That means millions of mothers are going through pregnancy with hidden health risks that can turn dangerous.
Why did the recommendation change to 8 visits?
Because 4 visits are simply not enough to protect a mother and her baby.
Here is what happens when a pregnant woman does not get enough care:
Silent dangers are missed: Conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and severe lack of blood (anaemia) do not always feel painful at first.
If visits are too far apart, a nurse or doctor might find out too late, when it has already become an emergency.
The baby’s growth is left to chance: Checking how the baby is growing, the position of the baby, and the fluid around the baby requires regular visits, especially as the pregnancy gets bigger.
Preventing real tragedies: Pregnancy is not just about checking for a heartbeat today. It is about stopping early births, very small babies, and infections that a rushed or one-time visit cannot catch.
My message is simple:
- Start your visits early.
- Keep going.
- Do not stop after the first few months.
If you know a pregnant woman today, send this to her regular checkups save lives.”
