Ashley Evans: I Never Imagined I’d Be a Fertility Story with a Group of People Whom I Have Never Met…
Ashley Evans, Infertility Advocacy Speaker at ACE Origins, shared on LinkedIn:
“I never imagined I’d be a fertility story with a group of people who I have never met.
For a long time, I didn’t talk about it.
Infertility was something deeply personal. It was something I found difficult to explain, and something I worried people wouldn’t understand or care about.
Then, gradually, I started opening up more. I became more comfortable talking about our experience and sharing parts of our journey with others.
Our infertility journey also coincided with losing my sister to suicide. It was an incredibly difficult period of my life, and being bereaved by suicide had its own impact on me, alongside everything we were going through with infertility and fertility treatment. These experiences shaped me in ways I didn’t fully understand at the time.
But as time went on, something changed.
I went from keeping my experience to myself, to talking about it more openly, to eventually asking myself a different question.
What if I could do more with my story than simply share it with the people around me?
What if I could use my experiences to help other people feel less alone? To challenge some of the assumptions surrounding infertility? To help workplaces and communities understand how to better support people going through difficult experiences?
That was the point at which sharing my story became something bigger and I decided to take it onto a public platform and become a speaker.
It wasn’t because I suddenly became fearless. And it wasn’t because sharing something so personal became easy overnight. It was because I found a reason that felt bigger than my fear.
I wanted to help change the conversations we have around infertility. To bring something that is often experienced in silence out into the open, and to help create more understanding and compassion.
Looking back, I can see how far I’ve come. From not talking about my experience, to finding my voice, to standing in front of an audience and sharing parts of my life I once struggled to put into words.
And I’m proud that I made that decision.
Because sometimes, our experiences can become the starting point for something we never imagined we’d do.”
