Mark Amols: Does Your PCOS Treatment Feel Like a “Band-Aid”?
Mark Amols, Medical Director at New Direction Fertility Centers, shared on LinkedIn:
“When patients tell me their PCOS treatment feels like a ‘Band-Aid,’ I don’t want to dismiss it. I want to understand what they feel is being missed.
I also want them to know that a medication isn’t superficial just because it doesn’t permanently cure a condition. Treating and curing are different goals. Birth control, metformin, letrozole, lifestyle change, and even ovarian drilling can each improve one problem without eliminating the whole syndrome.
But sometimes the patient is pointing at a real gap: metabolic health that was never discussed, hair growth that’s the biggest concern while every visit focuses on periods, or a plan that never asked about pregnancy goals.
The lesson for those of us in clinical care: a prescription can be appropriate and still be only one piece of what a patient needs. Explaining what each treatment is meant to accomplish is part of the treatment.
This week’s Taco Bout Fertility Tuesday walks through both sides, and ends with three questions patients can bring to their next appointment. Clinicians, they’re worth borrowing too.”
