Dina Ibrahem: 0 Motility, 1 Critical Decision
Dina Ibrahem, Embryologist at Queens Fertility Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by M. Cristina Magli et al., published in Reproductive BioMedicine Online.
“Zero Motility. One Critical Decision.
When all sperm are immotile, how do we select the right one for ICSI?
Could polarized light guide our decision?
Sperm-head birefringence offers a non-invasive approach to selecting totally immotile sperm based on their optical properties.
What did the study reveal?
Magli et al. (2023) evaluated 192 ICSI cycles involving complete asthenozoospermia.
Cumulative live birth rates:
- Partial birefringence: 62.7%
- Total birefringence: 46.7%
- No birefringence: 9.0%
Interestingly, partial birefringence was associated with the most favorable outcomes.
However, birefringence is not a definitive viability test, and these observational findings require further validation.
In totally immotile sperm samples, would you trust birefringence alone, or would you still rely on conventional viability tests before ICSI?”
Title: Birefringence properties of human immotile spermatozoa and ICSI outcome.
