Marieke Ogay։ Antioxidant Status and Magnesium։ Key to Miscarriage Risk?
Marieke Ogay, Bachelor in Midwifery (Bachelier Sage-Femme) at Erasmushogeschool Brussel, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A prospective study of 95 pregnant women (35 with ≥3 previous miscarriages, 60 controls) found clear biochemical differences already between 11–14 weeks of pregnancy. Women with recurrent miscarriage histories had:
Higher antioxidant enzyme activity (SOD‑1 and GSH‑Px), suggesting a mobilised but strained defense against oxidative stress.
Lower total antioxidant status (TAS) and lower serum magnesium levels, pointing to an exhausted antioxidant system and possible role for magnesium as a predictive marker. Higher beta‑hCG values, while PAPP‑A did not significantly differ between groups.
The authors propose that a pattern of higher SOD‑1 and GSH‑Px, with lower TAS and magnesium, could help identify women at increased risk of spontaneous miscarriage, and argue for closer follow‑up and consideration of antioxidant and magnesium support later in pregnancy. For clinicians and researchers, this reinforces the need to look beyond anatomy, genetics and hormones, and to integrate oxidative‑stress and micronutrient assessment into recurrent miscarriage work‑ups.
