Naila Jabeen: Understanding Genetic Factors in IVF Success
Naila Jabeen, Consultant Gynaecologist and IVF Specialist at AAS Fertility and IVF Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Genetics plays a far more significant role in fertility than many people realize, and it is an area that deserves greater awareness and thoughtful discussion.
From a clinical perspective, genetic factors can influence reproductive health at multiple levels. In women, genetic variations may affect ovarian reserve, egg quality, chromosomal integrity, and the risk of recurrent pregnancy loss. In men, genetics can contribute to sperm production issues, DNA fragmentation, or chromosomal abnormalities that impact fertilization and embryo development.
In fertility practice, genetic considerations often come into focus when couples experience unexplained infertility, repeated IVF failures, or recurrent miscarriages. Conditions such as chromosomal rearrangements, single-gene disorders, or inherited mutations may not present with obvious symptoms, yet they can significantly affect reproductive outcomes.
This is where genetic evaluation and counseling become important. Identifying underlying genetic factors allows clinicians to individualize treatment plans, guide patients through appropriate testing options, and reduce the risk of passing on certain inherited conditions. In assisted reproduction, genetic screening can also support informed decision-making and improve the chances of a healthy pregnancy.
As fertility care continues to advance, integrating genetics into routine evaluation is becoming an essential part of evidence-based reproductive medicine. It helps shift care from trial-and-error approaches to more precise, patient-centered strategies.
Understanding the genetic component of fertility empowers both clinicians and patients to make informed, proactive decisions.
