Laura-Rose Thorogood Highlights LGBTQIA+ Barriers in Fertility Care
Laura-Rose Thorogood, Chief Executive Officer at Make Birth Better, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The Guardian FERTILITY SUPPLEMENT: FERTIITY ARTICLE
Incredibly proud through my role on the Women’s Network Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists | RCOG to have been asked to write a piece for the Fertility supplement in The Guardian that was released yesterday.
For too long LGBTQIA+ people’s fertility, family formation and birthing journeys are erased, invalidated, and not represented.
We are one of the fastest growing demographics of people having fertility treatment in the UK, and our stories deserve to be heard, celebrated but also help inform action positive change, with a view that intersectionality means that we are often from other marginalized communities too- black and brown, have cultural or religious needs, disabled, neurodivergent or from areas of low economic income.
And that’s why LGBT Mummies work hard to to ensure the landscape changes for all LGBTQIA+ people from fertility funding provision access (Fertility Justice Campaign), to visibility and representation, to shaping policies, guidelines and law to ensure our families ate prottfted and afforded the same rights as our heterosexual counterparts.
Our journeys are tough, full of barriers and implications and must be seen.
Thank you Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, The Guardian for sharing, and it’s rare that a queer voice is so far up in a supplement!
