“CAN A 5PN EMBRYO DEVELOP NORMALLY?

A Published Case Report (2026)

A human IVF zygote was identified with five pronuclei (5PN), a morphology traditionally considered abnormal.
Despite its abnormal pronuclear pattern, the embryo continued normal development and reached the blastocyst stage.
The resulting blastocyst was assessed by PGT-A and found to be euploid and diploid.
Following embryo transfer, a healthy live birth was reported.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

Embryologists generally consider 2PN as the normal fertilization pattern. Embryos displaying multiple pronuclei are often associated with chromosomal abnormalities.

This case demonstrates that morphology alone may not always predict the developmental potential of an embryo.

IMPORTANT NOTE

This is a single published case report and should not be interpreted as evidence that all 5PN embryos are viable or suitable for transfer.
