Asma Khalil: Chronic Pain at Midlife Deserves More Attention on World Menopause Day

Asma Khalil, Professor and Director of the Fetal Medicine Unit at Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust, shared on LinkedIn:

”World Menopause Day is on 18 October. The International Menopause Society’s 2026 theme is ‘Chronic Pain At Midlife’.

It covers joint and muscle pain, migraine and pelvic pain during and after the menopause transition, which the IMS notes remain underestimated in both research and care.

The numbers are large. WHO reports that in 2021 women aged 50 and over made up 26% of all women and girls worldwide, up from 22% a decade earlier.

The British Menopause Society estimates that up to 80-90% of women experience some menopausal symptoms, around a quarter describe them as severe, and symptoms last on average for more than seven years.

My clinical work is in pregnancy and fetal medicine, but women’s health does not end with the reproductive years. The principle is the same at every stage: symptoms deserve to be taken seriously and managed with individualised, evidence-based care.

I would like to recognise the GPs, practice nurses, menopause specialists, physiotherapists and pain teams who support women through this stage of life.”
