David Qiuping Peng: Ontario Government Improves IVF Funding Policy

David Qiuping Peng, Clinical Embryologist, Researcher, Author of Senior IVF Lab Procedures, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Big IVF News: Ontario Government Improves IVF Funding Policy — Supporting New Clinics, Good Doctors, and Dedicated Embryologists

For a long time, IVF data has been easy to manipulate, and unfortunately, some clinics have used this to mislead patients. The previous Ontario IVF funding policy made things even worse – it provided little or no funding to new clinics, yet covered unlimited FETs.

This created an unfair system: new clinics, skilled doctors, and responsible embryologists were left struggling, while others profited from repeated failed FETs. Funding was wasted, and patients suffered. Sadly, one of the most skilled embryologists in the world was even fired by a clinic in such an environment – simply because high skill did not fit into a system that rewarded failure. In that same clinic, the same egg donor was repeatedly stimulated, retrieving over 100 eggs each time – just to produce more embryos for repeated failed FETs. And of course, there were also many instances of serious academic bullying within this clinic – even though the research funding came from SR and ED. It was painful to watch, especially when REIs from this clinic even became presidents of CFAS, and the clinic could still pass all inspections, including those from Accreditation Canada.

Canada is a good and trustworthy country. Sometimes it just takes patience for truth and fairness to come through. I remember at the beginning of COVID-19, when I started wearing a mask in the workplace, the manager asked me why. I simply said, ‘My wife cares about me.’ Later, that same manager quietly left the position.

Now, the Ontario government has finally taken a big step forward: IVF funding will be based on the number of completed cycles and their pregnancy rates. This means IVF quality finally matters.

Thank God – this change will truly benefit patients, new clinics, good doctors, and responsible embryologists.
