Understanding Infertility: A Comprehensive Look at Male and Female Factors

It’s crucial to understand that infertility is not solely a ‘female issue‘ – both male and female factors contribute significantly to the challenges of conception.

Let’s break down some of the key contributors:

Female Factors:

  • Ovulatory Disorders: Irregular or absent ovulation is a common cause, often due to conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
  • Tubal Blockage: Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes can prevent sperm from reaching the egg or prevent the fertilized egg from reaching the uterus.
  • Uterine Factors: Issues such as fibroids, polyps, or abnormalities in the uterine shape can impact implantation.
  • Endometriosis: This condition, where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, can affect fertility.
  • Age: Female fertility naturally declines with age, especially after 35.

Male Factors:

  • Sperm Production & Quality: Low sperm count, poor sperm motility (movement), or abnormal sperm morphology (shape) are significant contributors.
  • Hormonal Imbalances: Hormones play a vital role in sperm production, and imbalances can lead to infertility.
  • Blockages: Obstructions in the reproductive tract can prevent sperm release.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption, and exposure to certain environmental toxins can also impact male fertility.
