Sirisha Chilla: Embryo-Maternal Communication During Implantation
Sirisha Chilla, Junior Embryologist at Ferty9 Fertility Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Embryo-Uterus Communication During Implantation.
Recent research highlights that embryo implantation is not a passive event but an active two way communication between the embryo and the endometrium.
Studies show that extracellular vesicles and lipid droplets are exchanged between embryonic and uterine cells within hours, carrying genetic and metabolic signals that regulate implantation.
Researchers used a human in-vitro co-culture model, meaning they grew embryo-like and uterine cells together under controlled lab conditions to track vesicle exchange and signalling in real time.
This lets scientists directly observe the early embryo-maternal crosstalk that’s usually inaccessible in vivo.
Key insights:
- Extracellular vesicles (EVs) and lipid droplets act as carriers of metabolic and genetic signals exchanged between the embryo and uterine lining within the window of implantation. These signals influence cellular energy metabolism, lipid processing, extracellular matrix remodelling, and receptivity.
- EV cargo (mRNA, lipids, metabolites) is taken up rapidly and used within recipient cells, driving changes that support embryo attachment and early implantation processes.
- Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) signalling modulates this crosstalk, when AhR is experimentally inhibited, embryo attachment strengthens, suggesting a fine tuning role in endometrial receptivity.
- Hormonal priming (e.g., progesterone, estrogen) alters uterine EV profiles, highlighting endocrine regulation of embryo-maternal communication.
These molecular interactions could inform:
- Identifying non-invasive biomarkers of endometrial receptivity
- Improving timing and outcomes in IVF embryo transfer
- Understanding mechanisms behind recurrent implantation failure
