The Social Infertility Tax Facing 2SLGBTQI+ Families – CFAS
Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society shared a post on LinkedIn:
“For many 2SLGBTQI+ individuals and couples, the journey to parenthood begins with costs that many others never have to consider.
Often referred to as the “social infertility tax,” these are the additional financial barriers associated with building a family through donor gametes, assisted reproductive technologies, legal services, surrogacy, and other pathways that are frequently necessary and not optional.
While fertility care is becoming more accessible across Canada, significant inequities remain. Access to publicly funded treatment, donor gametes, medications, and related services varies by province and territory, leaving many intended parents with substantial out-of-pocket expenses.
Recognizing these unique challenges, CFAS established the 2SLGBTQI+ Special Interest Group to help advance equitable, evidence-based reproductive care. Through education, collaboration, advocacy, and the development of best practices, the group is working to strengthen care for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and families across Canada.
Every person deserves the opportunity to build their family with access to informed, inclusive, and compassionate care. By continuing to raise awareness of these inequities, we can help create a more equitable future for family building in Canada.”
