Kate Booth: Happy World POI Day 2026

Kate Booth, Founder of the POInt, shared on LinkedIn:

”Happy World POI Day 2026

Today is the second ever World POI Day, and so much has changed in a year!

Here’s what hasn’t changed:

  • POI affects 1 in 27 women, yet most people have never heard of it
  • POI is not only a gynaecological condition; oestrogen deficiency affects every cell in the body
  • The symptoms of POI are similar to menopause: mood and psychological changes, hot flushes and night sweats, and myriad others
  • Many people with POI in the UK wait for more than 4 years for a diagnosis, which is insane because…
  • The diagnosis is a single, simple blood test with an FSH value over 25 IU
  • Even once diagnosed, most women with POI are not receiving the appropriate (or any) treatment, which is also insane, because…
  • The gold standard treatment is HRT, which is readily available on the NHS and has a well-known safety profile (although tested in older women only)
  • HRT not only relieves symptoms, but also reduces the long-term risks of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and (potentially) Alzheimer’s

Here’s the good news:

  • POI is becoming more recognised as Women’s Health in general gets more focus and investment
  • The Daisy Network is working towards more advocacy and provides lots of support for people with POI
  • The POInt published a white paper this year calling for more awareness, research and investment into POI
  • Pharma companies are starting to wake up to the opportunity
  • Watch this space!”
