Lucia Orozco Lopez: Why Wasn’t Europe Among the First Markets for Fertilo?
Lucia Orozco Lopez, Founder and Director at Femtech Spain and Co-founder at Orvela Partners, shared on LinkedIn:
”If you are in the women’s health industry, you have probably heard it by now.
Last week, Ferring Pharmaceuticals announced an agreement to acquire Gameto, the reproductive biotech behind Fertilo, for up to $1.38 billion.
What caught my attention was the Spanish connection.
In 2022, Gameto established its European office in Madrid and started preclinical development with two Spanish fertility clinics. Spain was chosen partly because of the size of its assisted reproduction market.
Fast forward to 2026, and Fertilo has received clearances in countries including Australia, Japan, Mexico and Peru, where the first baby conceived using the technology was born.
Meanwhile, its US Phase 3 trial is still ongoing.
This raises two interesting questions for me:
- Market access: If Spain has the clinical expertise, patients and market size, why wasn’t Europe among the first markets? Regulatory strategy isn’t just about compliance. It can determine where a company generates its first clinical experience, revenue and commercial traction.
- Corporate strategy: Ferring’s Menopur is a major fertility drug used for ovarian stimulation. Fertilo aims to significantly reduce the injections required. Ferring is potentially acquiring a technology that could disrupt part of its existing business.
As we talk more and more about women’s health innovation in Europe, I think these are exactly the questions we need to be asking.
Not just how we support innovation, but how we make Europe a competitive place to bring that innovation to patients.”
