Margaret Cali: Sometimes Grief Simply Sits Beside the Joy

Margaret Cali, IVF Readiness Integration Strategist, shared on LinkedIn:

“I’ve been in two minds about sharing this.

Before my son, there were two babies I never got to hold.

I was 25 when we started trying. What followed were years of hoping, two miscarriages, PMOS (formerly PCOS), male factor infertility and, eventually, fertility burnout. I stepped away to rebuild myself before I could try again.

At 40, I had my son through IVF. He’s 22 now.

I’m so grateful to have him in my life. But his arrival didn’t take away the loss of the two babies who came before him. And my son longed for a brother or sister, which was something I couldn’t give him.

I share this because many of the women who walk into fertility clinics are carrying losses no one can see on their file. Some losses were years ago. Some were never spoken about. Some sit quietly alongside a child they already have.

When infertility and pregnancy loss come together, the grief is layered. It’s grief for the baby, for the future imagined with them, and often for the family she hoped to build.

A good outcome doesn’t always end that grief. Sometimes it simply sits beside the joy.

Not every story ends the way mine did, and I never take that lightly.

For fertility-care professionals: how do you make space for the losses patients carry into treatment, even when they happened years ago?”
