Family Planning Challenges for Women with Lupus – The Lupus Foundation of Australasia
The Lupus Foundation of Australasia shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Family planning is a critical — and frequently under-addressed — clinical issue for women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Unintended pregnancy in SLE can result in significant maternal and fetal complications, particularly during periods of high disease activity or when patients are prescribed teratogenic medications. Despite this, evidence shows persistent gaps in contraceptive counselling, screening, and uptake of effective contraception methods.
This article reviews:
- Risk-based contraceptive selection in SLE
- Thromboembolic and medication-related considerations
- Underutilisation of long-acting reversible contraceptives
- The shared responsibility of rheumatology and gynaecology care
Improving reproductive health outcomes in lupus requires structured counselling, interdisciplinary collaboration, and patient-centred decision-making.
