Manisha Kumari: What is IVF? Understanding the Basics
Manisha Kumari, Embryologist at Raja Hospital, shared on LinkedIn:
“What is IVF?
Understanding the Basics of In Vitro Fertilization
Continuing my Clinical Embryology Knowledge Series, let’s start with one of the most fundamental questions:
What exactly is IVF?
IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization, an assisted reproductive technology (ART) in which fertilization takes place outside the body in a controlled laboratory environment.
The basic IVF journey involves several important steps:
- Ovarian stimulation
- Oocyte retrieval
- Sperm preparation
- Fertilization
- Embryo culture
- Embryo transfer
Behind these steps is a multidisciplinary team, with embryologists playing a crucial role in the laboratory—from handling gametes and assessing fertilization to monitoring embryo development and supporting cryopreservation.
This is just the beginning of the IVF journey. In my upcoming posts, I will break down each step in a simple and educational way.
