“Monochorionic-Monoamniotic Twin with Aberrant Vascular Anastomosis:
(Monoamniotic twin with abnormal vascular anastomosis)
Monochorionic twins are monozygotic (identical) twins who share the same placenta, occurring in 0.3% of all pregnancies.
Monochorionic twins usually have two amniotic sacs (monochorionic-diamniotic, or ‘MoDi’), but sometimes, as in my case, they may share the same amniotic sac (monochorionic-monoamniotic, or ‘MoMo).
In addition to sharing a single placenta, the circulatory systems of monochorionic twins may be connected by random vascular anastomoses. This can cause disproportionate blood flow and lead to twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS).
In monoamniotic twins (identical twins in a single sac), the most significant risk is entanglement of the umbilical cords, which can decrease or stop blood flow to the babies, putting their lives at risk.
The most important step in determining the chorionicity and amnionicity of a twin pregnancy is an ultrasound examination of the pregnant woman as early as possible. As the pregnancy progresses, it becomes more difficult to distinguish between identical and fraternal twins.”
