CDC Releases 2024 Pregnancy Mortality Data – Preeclampsia Foundation

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released their 2024 Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System (PMSS) data yesterday, which is important national surveillance data to better understand the causes of pregnancy-related deaths. CDC requests the 54 reporting areas* (50 states, Puerto Rico, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, New York City, Washington, DC) voluntarily send death records for all women ages 10-60 years old who died during or within 1 year of the end of their pregnancy, regardless of the cause of death. (A pregnancy-related death is defined as a death during or within 1 year of the end of pregnancy from any cause related to, or aggravated by, the pregnancy.)

The leading causes of pregnancy-related death included (among 665 deaths analyzed):

  • Cardiovascular conditions (such as cardiomyopathy) (22%)
  • Other non-cardiovascular medical conditions (often pre-existing conditions like autoimmune conditions, asthma, diabetes, etc.) (15.2%)
  • Infection or sepsis (including COVID-19) (14.4%)
  • Hemorrhage (14.1%)

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy was the sixth leading cause, contributing to about 7.7% of pregnancy-related deaths.

The data reflected continuing racial disparities in pregnancy-related death rates between non-Hispanic white women and those of American Indian/Alaskan Native or Non-Hispanic Black ancestry. It also provides preliminary data on state and regional variation in pregnancy-related death rates.

*It’s important to note that the PMSS data is not the same as the analysis done by state-level maternal mortality review committees (MMRC), which are another important layer to understanding the leading causes of maternal death. Maternal mortality review is a process by which a multidisciplinary committee at the state or local level identifies and reviews deaths that occur during or within 1 year of the end of pregnancy. MMRCs have access to multiple sources of information that can provide a deeper understanding of the circumstances surrounding a death than PMSS.”
