Emergency Caesarean Births in the UK Rising Trends Inequalities and the Urgent Need for Safer Maternity Care – RCOG
Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today, BBC News published a story examining the rise in emergency caesarean births across the UK and changing birth trends, featuring commentary from RCOG President Dr Alison Wright. Dr Wright also joined BBC Woman’s Hour this morning to discuss what these trends mean for women, babies and maternity services.
BBC analysis shows that a quarter of all babies in England are now delivered by emergency caesarean section, marking a significant rise over the past five years.
As birth trends continue to evolve, maternity services must have the workforce, obstetric theatre capacity, beds and facilities needed to respond to growing demand and ensure every woman can have the right birth for her.
The coverage also highlighted the stark inequalities that persist in maternity care. While the national average for emergency caesarean births is around one in four, this rises to around one in three for Black and Asian mothers, reflecting the continued impact of racial inequality and discrimination on maternal outcomes.
As a College, we are committed to working collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure better outcomes for all women and reduce inequalities in care for those from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.
That is why we are calling on the government to set clear and ambitious targets to end inequalities in maternity outcomes, backed by dedicated funding and shaped with women from ethnic minority backgrounds, so that every woman and baby receives the safe, personalised and compassionate care they deserve.
