Unique Okewoye: Malaria in Pregnancy Is Deadly

Unique Okewoye, Community Manager at PentaPro Realty, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Malaria in Pregnancy is deadly!

One mosquito bite during pregnancy could cost two lives.

Malaria during pregnancy can harm the baby, and even lead to stillbirth, miscarriage, low birth weight, or preterm delivery.

In severe cases, if malaria is not treated properly, both the mother and the baby can die.

This is how it works:
When a pregnant woman has malaria, the malaria parasites can invade the placenta (which feeds the baby), causing:

  • Poor oxygen and nutrient supply to the baby
  • Severe anemia in the mother (meaning not enough blood for both her and the baby)
  • Inflammation in the placenta All of these can increase the risk of the baby dying in the womb or being born very weak.

In fact, malaria in pregnancy is one of the major causes of maternal and infant deaths in Nigeria and many African countries.

So what should you do?
