Anna David: Can You Predict Pregnancy Outcome at Diagnosis of Early-Onset FGR?

Anna David, Director at the Institute for Women’s Health, University College London, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper she co-authored with colleagues published in the European Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Biology:

”Fetal growth restriction diagnosed before 32 weeks of gestation is called early-onset FGR. It is associated with stillbirth, preterm birth and managing these pregnancies is challenging.

Can you predict pregnancy outcome at diagnosis of early-onset FGR? Yes, you can – and parents want to know, so let’s counsel them using evidence:

Our new study shows that in early-onset FGR, maternal serum Placental Growth Factor (PlGF) <5th centile for gestational age is strongly associated with

  1. preterm birth <32 weeks of gestation.
  2. birthweight <3rd centile.
  3. perinatal death.

PlGF can be useful as a risk stratification tool in early-onset fetal growth restriction.”
