Low Risk of Endometrioma Infection After Oocyte Retrieval – RBMO

“This study highlights the low incidence of ovarian endometrioma (OMA) infections following oocyte retrieval in women undergoing controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) for either IVF/ICSI or fertility preservation.
Finding just six cases of OMA among 1,668 cycles (0.36%), the study underscores the rarity of this adverse event despite the proximity of endometriotic cysts to the puncture site.
This large single-center cohort study provides strong evidence that oocyte retrieval in women with OMA is associated with a very low risk of OMA infection requiring surgery. These findings reinforce the overall safety of COS in endometriosis affected women and support the routine use of ART and fertility preservation strategies without requiring systematic surgical removal of OMA.
