Meurig Gallagher: International Limits on the Number of Offspring Per Gamete Donor

Meurig Gallagher, Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Healthcare Science at University of Birmingham, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Proud to see Jackson Kirkman-Brown presenting the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) new position paper this morning, calling for international limits on the number of families created per gamete donor, out today in Human Reproduction.

The recommendation in short: an EU-wide limit per donor, starting at 50 families internationally and stepping down to 15 or fewer over time, an EU-wide donor registry, and a 20-year cap on an individual donor’s gametes being used to make new families.

These limits have been repeatedly called for by donor conceived people, and the ESHRE Working Group, Co-Chaired by Lucy Frith and Jackson Kirkman-Brown, are answering that call. It’s now up for clinics to confirm they will only work with gamete banks that hold to these limits across all their donors!

Paper.”
