Abhishek Saxena: Would You Trust Spermbot-Assisted Fertilization in Clinical Practice?
Abhishek Saxena, Embryologist at Fortis Healthcare, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Scientists Built ‘Spermbots’ — But Are We Ready for It?
Yes, you read that right.
Researchers have developed micro/nanorobots capable of carrying sperm cells — a concept straight out of science fiction, now grounded in real science.
Here’s what actually happens:
- Tiny helical microrobots can capture immotile sperm
- They are guided using magnetic fields
- They can transport and release sperm near the egg
This isn’t theory — studies have already demonstrated that these micromotors can capture, transport, and release live sperm cells under physiological conditions (ACS Publications)
Even more fascinating:
- These ‘spermbots’ are part of biohybrid microrobotics
- They combine living sperm + artificial microstructures (Wikipedia)
- Their goal? Assist fertilization and overcome male infertility challenges
Reality check:
Infertility affects ~1 in 6 couples globally, with male factors contributing to nearly 50% of cases (PMC)
This is where such technology could be game-changing.
But here’s the truth most viral posts miss:
This technology is still experimental.
- Not part of routine IVF practice
- Not a replacement for ICSI
- Major challenges remain: safety, control, and clinical validation (PMC)
So what’s the real purpose?
Not to ‘use lazy sperm blindly’…
But to help viable yet immotile sperm reach the egg — especially in severe asthenozoospermia cases.
The Bigger Question:
If we start assisting even non-motile sperm to fertilize…
Are we solving infertility — or redefining natural selection?
Let’s discuss:
Would you trust spermbot-assisted fertilization in clinical practice?.”
