“When Progesterone Rises, but No Egg Is Released.

Did you know that sometimes a follicle can grow and respond to ovulation hormones but not actually release an egg? This condition is known as a luteinised unruptured follicle (LUF).

Here’s the catch: even if progesterone levels rise and your period arrives on time, it doesn’t guarantee that ovulation occurred. Serial ultrasound scans are essential to monitor follicle growth and confirm if it collapses after ovulation.

In a natural-cycle study, LUF was found in about 11% of women with unexplained infertility. A separate study involving clomiphene-stimulated IUI cycles revealed a higher incidence of 25%.

While this might sound alarming, it doesn’t mean every woman with unexplained infertility needs repeated scans. However, monitoring could uncover insights that a single progesterone test may miss!
