“New Scientific Infographic – Microplastics and Female Reproductive Health.

Microplastics are now being detected in human blood, placenta, breast milk, and even ovarian follicular fluid, raising important questions about their potential impact on female reproductive health.

This infographic summarizes the current scientific evidence on:

What microplastics are and how we are exposed to them
Their distribution in the female reproductive system
Proposed biological mechanisms, including oxidative stress, inflammation, endocrine disruption, DNA damage, and epigenetic alterations
Potential effects on ovarian function, oocyte quality, endometrial health, and pregnancy outcomes
Current evidence from human studies, knowledge gaps, and future research priorities

While experimental and animal studies suggest several plausible mechanisms, human evidence is still emerging, and more large-scale, longitudinal studies are needed to establish causal relationships and define safe exposure levels.

This poster aims to present a comprehensive overview of the current state of research while highlighting both established findings and areas that require further investigation.
