Arsiak Vartenian: The Question I Wish Fertility Clinics Asked Women More…

Arsiak Vartenian, Founder and Host of Smart Is The New Sexy, shared on LinkedIn:

”I wish fertility clinics asked women this question more:

‘How are you actually coping with all of this?’

During infertility, we become fluent in numbers.

  • How many follicles? How many eggs?
  • How many fertilized? How many embryos?
  • What grade? What percentage? What are the odds?

Those questions matter. Of course they do.

But I so wish these questions were asked more:

  • Do you have support outside this clinic?
  • Do you understand your options, or are you too overwhelmed to process them?
  • How much more treatment do you feel emotionally capable of doing?
  • What does another failed cycle mean for you emotionally?
  • Are you making this decision because it feels right for you, or because you’re terrified of stopping?

I went through 6 IVF cycles.

And one thing infertility taught me is that medical treatment never stays purely medical.

Every result enters your marriage.

  • Your friendships. Your finances.
  • Your relationship with your body.
  • Your confidence. Your plans for the future.

A fertility clinic’s job is obviously to treat infertility.

But the person sitting across from the doctor is not just a reproductive system.

She is usually scared. Exhausted.

Trying to absorb enormous amounts of information while making some of the biggest decisions of her life.

I hope fertility care keeps moving toward treating the whole person.
Not only her numbers.

P.S. Did you feel emotionally supported by your fertility clinic?”
