Aisling Mooney: 4 Words From Someone Who Had Been Through Fertility Treatment

Aisling Mooney, Founder and AI Consultant at Coire Studio, shared on LinkedIn:

“Four words on a whiteboard at Maynooth yesterday, from someone who had been through fertility treatment and only learned afterwards how much she was never told.

About her body.

About how long it would take.

About how common miscarriage is.

ReproWork is mapping the gaps in support in the workplace and elsewhere experienced during infertility, and I have had the privilege of sitting on its advisory panel this year.

Some of what the research is surfacing:

  • Only around 10% of employers have any policy or mechanism for time off for fertility treatment. Everyone else is using annual leave, sick leave or a quiet word with a manager.
  • Time is the paramount factor. Delay hurts outcomes. Privately funded patients get less time off, and public-funding-only patients get significantly fewer cycles.
  • Roughly 1 in 10 people who disclosed at work reported discrimination. So most don’t disclose. Some still ask for clinic letters on Maternity Hospital paper so the employer won’t know.

The line that stayed with me: reproductive health equity is not just whether treatment exists and is funded. It is whether work makes it realistically accessible, for everyone.

Huge credit to Marian Crowley-Henry, Valentina Paolucci at the School of Business, Maynooth University, and Roisin McConnell and Merrion Fertility Clinic for partnering on the clinical side.

Funded by Taighde Eireannn – Research Ireland.

Final report and a national research agenda land in December.”
