Emmanuel Ogbaki: Fertility Is Not Simply a Woman’s Issue – It Takes 2 People to Conceive

Emmanuel Ogbaki, Host of The African Possibility Podcast, shared on LinkedIn:

”When a couple struggles to conceive, why is the woman so often blamed first?

That question became one of the most important parts of my conversation with Dr. Julian Mamiso, an obstetrician, gynaecologist, and fertility specialist whose career in reproductive medicine spans more than three decades.

In this episode of The African Possibility Podcast, Dr. Mamiso takes us beyond the science of IVF into the cultural and emotional realities surrounding fertility.

We discuss male and female fertility, when couples should seek professional help, fertility after 35, egg freezing, IVF, donor conception, surrogacy, fertility supplements, family pressure, and why reproductive medicine across Africa needs stronger systems and regulation.

But Dr Mamiso’s own journey is equally fascinating.

From growing up in northern Nigeria and studying medicine at the University of Ibadan to moving to Britain in the early 1980s, practising across Wales, London, and internationally, and helping establish one of Wales’ early private IVF services, his story is also one of migration, resilience, medicine, and service.

One reflection stayed with me:

Fertility is not simply a woman’s issue. It takes two people to conceive, and both deserve to be part of the investigation and conversation.

This is an episode I hope African families, couples, and young people will watch together.
