Vignesh Devraj: What If Menopause Is More Than a Hormonal Change?

Vignesh Devraj, Director of Sitaram Beach Retreat, shared on LinkedIn:

“What if menopause isn’t simply about managing symptoms, but understanding what your body needs through a major transition?

Menopause is often reduced to hormones, hot flashes, weight gain or sleep changes.

But women’s health is much more interconnected than that.

The body changes through every stage of a woman’s life.

Perhaps the most important step is learning to understand those changes rather than treating every woman with the same approach.

What Does it Really Mean to Support Your Body Through Menopause?

Menopause is often treated as a collection of symptoms: weight gain, hot flashes, disturbed sleep, fatigue or mood changes. But what if we looked at menopause as a transition that involves the whole body rather than a single hormonal change?

Women move through several physiological stages across their lives, and the way the body responds to each stage can be influenced by years of nutrition, lifestyle, sleep, movement, stress and overall wellbeing.

Perhaps supporting menopause isn’t only about managing what happens when symptoms appear. It is also about understanding the foundations that have been built long before that transition begins.

Menopause Is A Transition, Not Just A Symptom

The experience of menopause can vary significantly from one woman to another. Changes in weight, sleep, hot flashes, energy and digestion cannot always be understood through one measure alone.

Ayurveda looks at the larger picture, including Agni, Vata, Pitta, Kapha and Ojas, along with lifestyle, nutrition, sleep and emotional wellbeing.

This creates a different way of looking at menopause: not simply as a problem to be managed, but as a transition that requires the body to adapt.

Your Health Is Built Over Time

The way a woman experiences menopause may also be connected to the years leading up to it.

Menstrual health, digestion, nutrition, sleep, movement and lifestyle all contribute to the body’s overall state. Supporting these foundations throughout the reproductive years may therefore become an important part of preparing for the transition ahead.

Menopause doesn’t happen in isolation. It is part of a much longer health journey.

More Exercise Isn’t Always Better

Exercise is an important part of health, but the right amount can change as the body changes.

During menopause, pushing harder isn’t necessarily the answer. Appropriate movement, recovery, regular meals and adequate sleep can be equally important.

Health isn’t always about doing more. Sometimes it is about learning what your body responds to best.

Is Shatavari Right For Every Woman?

Shatavari is often described as a universal herb for menopause. But Ayurveda takes a more individual approach.

An herb that may be appropriate for one person may not necessarily be appropriate for another.

Prakriti, Vikriti, strength and the individual’s current state all matter when deciding what kind of support is suitable.

This is an important distinction between personalised Ayurvedic care and following a health trend simply because it is popular.

Panchakarma Needs Preparation

Panchakarma is sometimes presented as a fixed detox programme, or as something everyone can approach the same way.

But traditional Ayurvedic care places importance on preparation, assessment and individual readiness.

The process involves preparation, detoxification and rejuvenation, with the approach adapted according to an individual’s physical and mental strength.

The same principle extends to fertility care. Preparing both the body and mind, including what Ayurveda describes as Saumanasyam, becomes part of creating the right foundation.

Listening To The Body

Fatigue is another example of why looking beyond a single number can be important.

A person may have seemingly adequate nutritional markers and still feel tired, depleted or low in energy. Digestion, nourishment, sleep, stress and emotional patterns can all influence how we experience our health.

The same applies to eating. When food is consumed while working, rushing between meetings or constantly distracted, nourishment can become another task to complete rather than a moment to support the body.

Perhaps one of the most valuable skills through every stage of women’s health is learning to listen to the body rather than constantly overriding its signals.

Personalised Care For Every Stage

Menopause, fertility and women’s health cannot always be approached through a single formula.

The body changes across different stages of life, and the support it needs can change with it. Ayurveda offers a framework for understanding those individual differences and creating care around the person rather than simply the symptom.
