“Almost none cover epigenetic risk.
Here’s what’s actually happening:
Somewhere between fertilization and day five, an embryo rewrites part of itself – not the DNA, but the instructions for reading it.
That rewrite happens inside a dish. Inside a lab. Under clinical control the patient never sees.
And here’s the layer that gets left out of the disclosure gap entirely:
- Maintaining normal methylation during that window depends on methyl donors and oxidative-stress protection that most standard lab culture systems don’t fully replicate compared to the body.
- Head-to-head comparisons of the culture media clinics actually use show no meaningful difference between them – so the risk isn’t which approved medium a lab picks; it’s how tightly that window gets managed overall.
And here’s the uncomfortable part:
Nordic cohort data shows roughly three times higher odds of a rare imprinting disorder in ART-conceived children versus natural conception.
Absolute risk stays under 0.1% – small, real, and no longer dismissible as noise.
In other words: this was never purely a biology story.
It’s a disclosure story.
So the real question isn’t ‘is epigenetics a risk?’
It’s ‘why doesn’t a patient hear about it before she signs?’
Here’s what that gap actually costs a clinic:
Every year this stays undisclosed is a year closer to a patient finding out from someone other than her doctor – a lawyer, a headline, a support group instead of a consultation room.
That’s not a science problem anymore. That’s a trust problem waiting to happen.
The clinics that win the next decade won’t be the ones with the newest incubator.
They’ll be the ones who explained the dish before anyone had to ask.”
