Vida Shafti։ Artificial Intelligence in Female Infertility

Vida Shafti, Physician at The OB/Gyn and Infertility Center, shared on LinkedIn։

“Artificial Intelligence in Female Infertility: A Powerful Tool – Not a Replacement for Clinical Judgment

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming reproductive medicine. From predicting ovarian response to personalizing IVF protocols, AI has the potential to improve patient care. However, like every innovation, it brings both opportunities and challenges.

Advantages

  • Earlier identification of women at risk for diminished ovarian reserve (DOR).
  • More personalized ovarian stimulation and IVF treatment plans.
  • Improved embryo selection when combined with embryologist expertise.
  • Better prediction of IVF outcomes using multiple clinical variables.
  • Reduced unnecessary investigations and more efficient use of healthcare resources.
  • Decision support that helps clinicians analyze complex datasets beyond human capability.

Challenges

  • AI models are only as reliable as the data used to train them.
  • Limited diversity in training datasets may reduce accuracy across different populations.
  • Risk of ‘black-box’ recommendations that lack transparency.
  • Ethical concerns regarding privacy, bias, and informed consent.
  • AI should never replace empathy, communication, and individualized clinical decision-making.
  • Continuous validation through high-quality clinical research is essential before widespread implementation.
  • The future is not AI versus physicians – it is AI working alongside physicians.

As an OB-GYN and infertility specialist, I believe the greatest value of AI lies in supporting earlier diagnosis and truly personalized reproductive care. The challenge is to integrate AI responsibly while keeping the patient at the center of every decision.

What do you think?

Where do you see the greatest opportunity – or the greatest risk – for AI in female infertility?”
