Clare Mansfield: Pregnancy Loss Is Grief, and Grief Looks Different for Everyone…

Clare Mansfield, CEO and Founder of Flowering Fertility, shared on LinkedIn:

“Pregnancy loss is grief. And grief looks different for everyone.

This week, during Baby Loss Awareness Week, my thoughts are with every person and family who has experienced the heartbreak of losing a much-wanted baby.

I’m sharing something very personal today – my own experience of a chemical pregnancy, an early pregnancy loss.

One thing I’ve come to understand is that there is no single way to grieve.

And sometimes, the people closest to us experience the very same loss in completely different ways.

None of these responses makes the loss any less significant.

For those navigating infertility, pregnancy loss can carry additional layers of grief – the hopes invested in a positive pregnancy test, the future imagined, the uncertainty of what comes next, and sometimes the exhaustion of having to find the strength to try again.

A chemical pregnancy may happen very early, but the length of a pregnancy does not determine the depth of someone’s grief.

Sometimes simply saying ‘I’m here, I’m listening, and your loss matters’ can make an enormous difference.

Through my work with Flowering Fertility, I want to help create a world where people feel less alone in their fertility journeys, where their experiences are acknowledged and where compassionate support is easier to find.

To anyone carrying the sadness of pregnancy loss this week, whether your experience was recent or many years ago, please know that your grief deserves kindness, understanding and space.

And to those supporting someone through loss: listen without judgement, avoid comparisons, remember important dates, and don’t underestimate the power of simply being there.

You don’t have to grieve in the same way as anyone else for your grief to matter.

Resources and support

If you or someone you know would benefit from additional support, the following organisations and services may be helpful:

Specialist fertility counselling: Irish Fertility Counsellors Association

National Infertility Support and Information Group (NISIG)

Miscarriage Association of Ireland

Féileacáin – Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Association of Ireland

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Ireland

Please feel free to share these resources with anyone who might need them.

Sending love and compassion to everyone remembering a baby, grieving a loss, or quietly carrying a story that others may never know.”
