Marcos Meseguer Escrivá: What Happens When We Shorten the Blastocyst Warming Protocol?
Marcos Meseguer Escrivá, Global Director of Embryology Research at IVI RMA GLOBAL, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper he co-authored with colleagues published in Reproductive BioMedicine Online:
“What happens when we shorten the blastocyst warming protocol?
Can fatty acid supplementation support embryo recovery?
In this in vitro experimental study, we assessed 456 research-donated human blastocysts.
We compared conventional and shortened warming protocols, with and without fatty acid supplementation, and evaluated:
- embryo dynamics,
- mitochondrial activity,
- apoptosis and necrosis,
- outgrowth,
- and artificial intelligence scores.
Overall post-warming survival was 98.5%.
Among poor-quality blastocysts, the shortened protocol was associated with increased necrosis.
We also observed lower mitochondrial membrane potential with shortened warming.
Fatty acid supplementation supported mitochondrial activity with the conventional protocol and partially restored it with the shortened protocol.
AI scores showed no overall differences between groups, although they correlated with necrosis.
These findings help us better understand embryo recovery after warming.
This work is the result of an international collaboration with Kato Ladies’ Clinic in Tokyo. My special thanks to Kenji Ezoe and the Kato team, where the study was designed and undertaken. I also thank Laura Conversa Martínez (this research is part of her PhD and predoctoral fellowship in Japan) and Nanoha F. and Tetsuya Miki.”
