Devyanshi Dixit: What If the Next Clue to Endometriosis Is Already Circulating in the Blood?
Devyanshi Dixit, Program Manager at CLS Event and Publication and Conference Manager at the 12th Global Summit on Gynecology, Fertility and Women’s Health, shared on LinkedIn:
“What if the next clue to endometriosis is already circulating in the blood?
What if diagnosing endometriosis one day becomes less dependent on surgery – and more informed by signals circulating through the bloodstream?
For millions of women, endometriosis means years of pelvic pain, unanswered questions, and delayed diagnosis.
Yet the disease can be difficult to identify because its symptoms overlap with other conditions, and no single routine blood test can currently confirm it.
But researchers are investigating a promising direction: liquid biopsy.
What could blood reveal?
A blood sample may contain biological clues worth studying:
- MicroRNAs and other RNA signals – molecules that may reflect changes in gene regulation associated with disease.
- Inflammatory markers – signals that could help researchers understand the inflammatory environment linked to endometriosis, although they are not specific to the condition.
- Extracellular vesicles – tiny particles released by cells that carry molecular information and may offer insights into communication between tissues.
- Cell-free DNA and other molecular signatures – potential sources of information that researchers are exploring for non-invasive detection.
The challenge?
Finding a signature that can distinguish endometriosis from other causes of pelvic pain – and perform reliably across different patients.
The real breakthrough isn’t just detection. It is accuracy.
A useful blood-based test would need rigorous validation, reliable performance across different stages and presentations of the disease, and evidence that it improves clinical decisions.
Liquid biopsy is still an emerging research avenue for endometriosis-not an established diagnostic test. But its potential raises an important question about the future of care.
