Diana Tain: Vitrification May Affect Oocyte Resilience Without Causing Chromosomal Instability
Diana Tain, Scientific Content Specialist at Future Fertility and IVF Illustrator at Embryologist Musings Illustration Services, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Stefano Canosa et al. published in RBMO:
“It’s been a while…
Back with another paper summary!
Stefano Canosa from IVIRMA Global, Italy published this paper titled ‘Impact of oocyte vitrification on chromosome-specific aneuploidy patterns and oocyte resilience in advanced maternal age patients’ on Reproductive BioMedicine Online.
Thank you for sharing this paper with me so readily,
Apart from what’s in this picture, what stands out to me was how the author briefly explained oocyte resiliency. It is defined by the ability of the oocyte to combine genetic competence, cytoplasmic integrity, and post-fertilization developmental potential in order to ensure correct chromosome segregation and normal developmental progression.
One would think that in the process of vitrification, the spindles in the oocyte would be disturbed and cause chromosomal segregation errors. Well, apparently not!
Vitrification does not cause chromosomal instability, but it may destabilize the mechanisms that make an oocyte resilient and in this study, Vitrified-warmed oocytes had lower number of euploid blastocysts.
I left out so much information, so do check the paper out!
You would be able to complete it in 15 mins
Stay tuned as I am already preparing another one!”
