Rohit Gutgutia: Donor Eggs – The Decision Nobody Plans For

“Donor eggs: the decision nobody plans for:
Even couples who walk into a fertility clinic knowing donor eggs are a possibility are rarely ready for the day it becomes their reality. Usually it comes at the end of a long road. Failed cycles, a falling AMH and years of hoping the next attempt would be different.
Of all the decisions in fertility treatment, this is perhaps the most difficult. And it weighs far more heavily on the woman.
What she is being asked to accept is not just a treatment option. For many women, it can feel like a loss of something central to her sense of womanhood. Often it is the loss of a genetic link to her child, and with it a sense of continuity with her own family.
There may be an unspoken feeling that her body has let her down, and worries about bonding that she may never voice. Some may worry about looking into their child’s eyes one day and not finding their own.
Add to this that her husband’s genetic link stays intact, and she can feel quite alone in the decision even within the marriage.
Then there is family and society. Whom to tell, whether to tell the child, what people will say. In India these are serious considerations, not small ones.
⠀
The numbers bear this out. A 2018 study of nearly 600 infertile couples in India asked each partner separately whether they would accept treatment with donor eggs. Only 20% of the women said yes, against 44% of the husbands. The same couple, sitting side by side, can be miles apart on this question.
⠀
Which is why the timing and manner of raising it matter so much.
Too often donor eggs get put forward as a verdict, at the end of a poor AMH report or right after a failed cycle, when the couple is at their lowest.
Presented that way, it does not come across as an option. It only confirms what she already fears, that she has failed at what she always believed was the most natural thing for a woman.
⠀
Those of us who have this conversation every week can begin to treat it as routine. For the couple it is anything but. Clinical experience should make us better at handling it, never desensitised to it.
⠀
There is no easy way to have this conversation.
But there are better ways.
A separate consultation for this discussion, with a counsellor, and no package price on the table. Time for the couple to think. And strict confidentiality, from the front desk to the lab, because whether and how they share it is entirely their call.
⠀
Done this way, donor IVF gives many families a future.
Done in a hurry, it leaves wounds far deeper and longer lasting than any painful treatment.
