Rohit Gutgutia: What Is Stopping India from Being the World’s IVF Capital?

Rohit Gutgutia, Medical Director of Nova IVF Fertility, shared on LinkedIn։

”India could be the world’s IVF capital. What is stopping it?

Every month, couples fly into India from the UK, the US and the Gulf for fertility treatment. They come for doctors trained at the highest level, labs equipped as well as any in the world, and costs a fraction of what they would pay at home.

On paper, India should be the first name that comes to mind for fertility care anywhere.

And yet for most couples abroad, it is still an afterthought. A fallback, not a first choice.

Meanwhile, other countries have quietly made medical travel their business. Turkey has become a byword for it, from hair transplants to dental work. In fertility, British couples think first of Spain, Greece, the Czech Republic and Cyprus.

Americans look to Mexico or Barbados. Across Asia, Bangkok has built a reputation as a fertility hub.

None of these destinations has better doctors than India.

What they have done is make themselves easy to trust and easy to choose.

  • Clear packages.
  • Coordinators who answer at any hour and run the logistics.
  • Results presented consistently.
  • And a story told confidently, to the right couples, year after year.

The gap for India is not clinical. It is trust. A couple in London or Dubai cannot easily tell a world-class Indian clinic from an average one. Standards vary. Results are quoted in different ways.

And once they fly home, follow-up care often becomes a scramble of emails and WhatsApp messages with no one clearly in charge.

These are solvable problems. Consistent, honest reporting of outcomes. Clear, all-inclusive pricing for international patients. Proper handover to a doctor back home, so that the care does not stop at the airport.

And the confidence to present Indian fertility care to the world as what it is, among the best, not merely the cheapest.

India has already done this in other fields. IT services, generic medicines, cardiac care. Fertility can be next. The talent is here. What is needed is the industry deciding to earn global trust together, rather than one clinic at a time.

What do you think is the biggest barrier?”
