Francesca Crovetto: Can Pregnancy Complications Be Prevented Before Glucose Becomes Abnormal?

Francesca Crovetto, Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology – Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist at Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“What if the key to preventing pregnancy complications starts long before glucose levels become abnormal?

Today, I had the privilege of presenting our latest research at the 23rd World Congress in Fetal Medicine of The Fetal Medicine Foundation, in Vienna. It is always inspiring to exchange ideas with colleagues, and it was a real honour to share the first session of the day, “Topics in Maternal–Fetal Medicine”, with outstanding experts from the UK, Belgium, and Poland.

I presented our study, ‘CGM metrics through pregnancy and neonatal birthweight’, part of the Preeclampsia 360 Project at BCNatal Fetal Medicine Research Center.

Our findings suggest that:

  • Pregnancies resulting in LGA newborns show trimester-specific glucose patterns that conventional testing may miss.
  • Greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with lower maternal glucose levels in early pregnancy.
  • Maternal nutrition may represent an early, modifiable target to improve pregnancy outcomes.

Grateful to the entire Preeclampsia 360 Project team, this work is only possible through the talent, commitment, and collaboration of an exceptional group of colleagues.”
