Phoebe White: A Few Numbers More People Should Know This National Fertility Awareness Week

“If a friend told you they were struggling to get pregnant, would you know what to say?
The weight of infertility is heavy and often hidden in plain sight. It can take years and it sits alongside everything else in your everyday life. If it’s not you, it’s probably someone you know.
It’s National Fertility Awareness Week and lots of people already know that around 1 in 6 adults experience infertility. A few other numbers I think more people should know:
- In around a quarter of cases, no cause can be found.
- 1 in 31 babies born in the UK in 2024 was conceived through IVF.
- In England only around a quarter of IVF cycles are NHS-funded, so almost three-quarters of patients are paying for treatment themselves.
If you know someone going through it, you don’t need to have the answer. Try not to offer a fix like ‘just relax’ or ‘it’ll happen when you stop trying’.
Something as simple as ‘that sounds really hard, I’m here if you want to talk’ can mean more than any advice. It’s a rough road and feeling heard makes a real difference.
